Hey Alexa!
Hey Alexa, where will Amazon's second headquarters end up? Please tell us it's Philly! Amazon has finally narrowed down its list of possible cities for its second headquarters to be located and Philadelphia has made the cut! This search began with 238 cities in competition and this past Thursday Amazon finally knocked the list down to 20 finalists.
If you remember from our last blog we told you about the three possible sites that Philly has proposed for the headquarters to be stationed. If you're new to our blog or simply forgot, they include The Schuykill Yards in University City, uCity Square in University City and the Navy Yard. Amazon states that they are "seeking a location with viable real estate options, highly educated labor pool, a strong university system, travel and logistics needs, and a compatible cultural and community environment." Hey to me Philly sounds like the perfect fit!! But just how long will we have to wait to see if Amazon will be coming to Philly? Well, we have all the answers for you! Amazon says that they plan to make their final decision at some point this coming year.
So with something this exciting in the works what could this potentially mean for Philadelphians? Philly Curbed does an excellent job explaining how this second headquarters being stationed in Philly could impact renters. They tell us in their article that "if Amazon picks Philly to build its second headquarters, it could mean colossal changes, both good and bad for the city, including an influx of an estimated 50,000 new jobs." But if all of these new jobs open up that must mean that the employees are coming from somewhere other than just Philly right? Exactly! With the possibility of so many people moving to Philadelphia this means that the "rents in the Philadelphia metro will increase an additional 0.6 to 0.8 percent each year." Ready or not Philly Amazon might be coming for you!
